Wilderness Experiences for Youth (WEFY) FAQ's

Why go on a WEFY adventure?

WEFY is a great way to disconnect from the world and re-connect with God! If you love the outdoors and have a desire to grow spiritually then WEFY is the trip for you. We will spend the week backpacking through some of God’s most beautiful creations. Throughout the week we will create lifelong friendships with the other participants as well as with our counselors.

Who can participate in a WEFY trip?

The trip consists of 8-10 boys and 8-10 girls. The youth are ages 16-18. There is also a possibility of 2 parent guides. parent guides are parents of participants who register with their child to come on the trip. In addition there will be 2 counselor and a director on the trip.

Is the trip safe?

Anytime you enter into a wilderness area there is inherent risk. Safety is our top priority. In order to mitigate that risk, the director, along with other staff members, have been to this location many times and are very familiar with the area. Shortly before June the director will hike the route to ensure a safety plan is in place. We select great counselors who are CPR/first aid certified before the trip.  There will be a satellite phone on the trip in case of emergency and we will never be further than 6 miles from the cars. In case of emergency the staff have been trained to ensure group safety. WEFY will contact families to update them about any problems that arise.

Is WEFY part of BYU’s EFY program?

While especially for youth (EFY) and Wilderness Experiences for Youth (WEFY) have very similar goals, WEFY is a non-profit organization.
