WHERE AND WHEN DO WE MEET WORLD WIDE RIVER EXPEDITIONS?
- The trip leaves from Moab, Utah. The meeting time is approximately 12:00 PM at our office on Riversands Road. The address is above. When we meet we will eat lunch and pack the boat. If there are any problems call the local phone number in Moab, 435-259-7515.
How do I get to moab?
- You can fly into Salt Lake City or Grand Junctions Colorado. It is generally less expensive to fly into Salt Lake, whereas flying into Grand Junction is closer and a much quicker drive to moab by car. Driving time to moab from Grand Junction is two hours while driving from Salt Lake City is 4 hours.
Where should I stay in moab?
- If you need to stay in Moab the night before the trip a list of hotels and campgrounds can be found at www.dicovermoab.com. (ALL overnight accommodations are the responsibility of the client or the travel agent)
What kind of weather can we expect? Will it rain?
- The temperatures in the summer generally range from 80-110 degrees during the day and 70-85 degrees at night. July and August are the hottest months and rain is not common. Check the weather forecast prior to your arrival so that you can be prepared for rain if it is in the forecast.
How warm is the water?
- In June the water is between 50-60 degrees and in July/August the water can be 65-80 degrees
What is the itinerary?
- Day 1: We will meet at approximately 12 pm at the meeting location. After has had sufficient time to pack their bags we will leave for a 30 minutes ride to the river put-in. At the river you will meet the trip leaders and guides, have an orientation on river safety and then launch the trip! The rest of the day is spent rafting through the beautiful canyons of the Colorado river. Day 1 is flat water so it will be a good day to read a book, get to know everyone, play games and just hang out.
Day 2-4: During the course of our 5 day river trip we will be hiking to water falls, Indian dwelling sites, the loop, amazing side canyons and engaging in swimming, water fights, sunbathing and simply relaxing. Every morning we will be doing scripture study and every night we will have amazing firesides!
Last Day: Cross Lake Powell to take out point at the Hite Marina. We will arrive early afternoon. After unloading the rafts you are free to go home with your party or take the shuttle back to SLC (the shuttle is an additional 100$ each way)
What size are the rapids?
- Cataract Canyon is a class III-IV section of whitewater.
What kind of boats will we be in?
- On this section of the Colorado river we use larger motorized pontoon boats in higher water. When the water drops the main boat for this section is an 18 ft oar powered raft where the guide does all the driving. On all trips a motor is used for some parts.
Will we be allowed to swim along the way?
- Swimming will be part of your trip! Your guide will let you know when it is safe to swim. (When exiting the raft into the water always go feet first)
Do we have to wear life Jackets all of the time? Can we bring our own?
- Lifejackets are an absolute necessity any time you are in the water, including time in camp when you want to play in the river. We are required to use Coast Guard approved, Type V, Whitewater jackets, so please do not bring your won.
What personal equipment do I need for this trip?
- each guest should bring the clothing and toiletry items they would need for the duration of the trip. A complete packing list will be sent to you before the trip. It is best to bring items in a soft sided nylon bag or duffel bag no bigger than 12x12x24”.
Should I bring a camera?
- Our trip leaders will have cameras and gopros to record this amazing adventure. We encourage you to focus primarily on the trip but you are more than welcome to bring your own camera/GoPro. On the river, dry bags will be provided by our guides for easy access and storage.
Are tents provided?
- No you will need to bring your own tent
What equipment will I receive?
- Large dry bag for clothing and gear, cot, tarp, small personal dry bag for easy access, a mug, and a t shirt.
The mall dry bag is 7.5”W x 13” H. It is storage unit on the raft that is available to you during the course of the day. The dry bag, which contains your nylon bag items, sleeping bag, and foam pad will be secured to the raft during the day and will not be accessible except in camp.
When will I receive my camping gear?
- The camping gear will be already packed with your sleeping bag and ground cloth and will be given to you the day of your departure. The bag will be numbered for your convenience.
What are the toilet facilities like?
- A portable toilet is set up in camp. It will be e secluded behind a large rock or clump of trees. The toilet is available each morning and night and for emergencies. We are aware of the unique challenges females may encounter in the wilderness. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions concerning these issues. It is helpful for for women to wear 2 piece swimsuits (with a rash guard) or wrap around sarong to wear while on the trip for more privacy during the trip. Ziploc bags are handy for storage and disposal of feminine hygiene products.
Are there creepy crawls and critters on the river?
- Typically, this part of the river isn’t know for too many insect. It is a good idea, though, to bring bug spray for the occasional time There are some bugs out.
Can we take a shower?
- The only clean water we bring is for drinking and cooking. You can bathe in the river using biodegradable soap. Or you can use baby wipes for getting dust and river water off.
What do we do if one of our groups needs first aid?
- Our guides are all trained in Wilderness First Aid, CPR and will have a first aid with them. We will also have a satellite communicator with us. Protocols are in place in the event of an emergency while on the river.
Is water provided?
- Water is available on the boats each day and lemonade is available in camp. You may bring other beverages. Each person can bring up to 2 six-packs cans of soda per person. Drinks are placed in a drink cooler as space is available. Do not bring glass.
What kinds of meals are provided and what kind of food will we have?
- Meals start with lunch the first day and end with lunch the last day. Lunch each day will consist of a make it yourself sandwich buffet. Breakfast might be blueberry pancakes, sausage, melon or French toast with a continental of yogurt, cereal, oatmeal, fruit, etc.. Dinner may include pasta night, chicken night, steak night, salad, vegetables and/or dessert. You will not go hungry on this trip.
What if we have food allergies?
- Please let us know if you have food allergies well in advance of the trip. We can make accommodation to our menus for the safety of those with allergies. If your allergy is severe, we suggest you bring a few of your favorite food items and we can help you transport them on the river for you to use when necessary. The only peanut product we use are peanut butter for sandwiches. For those with gluten allergies we suggest bringing your own favorite brand of gluten free bread, noodles for pasta and supplemental breakfast items.
Will I need money?
- There are souvenirs you can buy at our meeting point if desired. You may want to keep some cash on you if you would like to tip the river guides (Not the YWE trip leaders). Do not bring anything you cannot afford to lose. (Airline tickets, car keys, wallets, jewelry etc)
What about tips?
- Please bring $40 in case you would like to tip the river guides (not the ywe trip leaders). You should never feel that a gratuity is automatically expected from you but it is a great way to acknowledge amazing service from the river guides. (Again not required)
Will I need to sign a waiver before I go?
- You will need to fill out a waiver from Youth Wilderness Experiences and with the river company. You cannot go on the trip until both waivers are filled out. Although we do everything in our power to keep this trip safe there are inherent dangers anytime you enter a wilderness area and/or a boat on a river.
Please note our Client Responsibilities: 1) all clients will be required to follow the safety policies and procedures of Raft Moab, Inc. DBA World Wide River Expeditions (‘WWRE’) and their guides’ instructions during activities. 2) All clients will be required to sign a Participant Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risks and Indemnity Agreement in favor of WWRE before departing on any trip; and 3) each client agrees and acknowledges when they sign up for a YWE and WWRE activity that they have significant responsibility for their own safety and that they agree they are ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE for their own safety during participation in an activity.
